A wood plaque hangs in the Biltmore foyer. It’s been there since 1942. It’s our “Honor Roll,” inscribed with the names of mem from Biltmore who served in the U.S. military. When it was dedicated, there were 19 names. Today there are 71 names. Two names are marked with a gold star indicating they made the ultimate sacrifice. Edgar Baughan who was killed in World War I and Frankie Crouse who died in the line of duty in the Vietnam War. Above the list is the name of Biltmore’s first pastor, Rev. W. Roy Carner, who resigned in 1941 to become a chaplain in the U.S. Army. Freedom is not free, and on this Memorial Day, we honor and remember the heroes who never made it home. ... See MoreSee Less
